Visakhapatnam is undoubtedly God’s chosen city in Andhra Pradesh, it is blessed with nature’s best and the Sub Marine Museum is another golden leaf to the mesmerizing feathers. The leaf is not just another leaf it has a specialty, it has been the first ever Sub Marine that has been turned into a Museum in the whole of Asia, it is also the second such museum in the world making it stand out in the crowd. The Sub Marine Museum is set up on the Rama Krishna Beach and is the city’s most prized possession. The INS Kurusura is a Kalvari-class submarine which belongs to the Indian Navy. It is a marvel of Russian engineering. It was built on 18, December 1969. It made its first voyage on 20th February, 1970 through Baltic Sea and made it to Visakhapatnam on May 11th 1970, ever since it has been a pride to the Indian Naval force.
INS Kurusura was in service for 31 glorious years, it has been a part of the Indo-Pakistan war in the year 1971. The ship was decommissioned in the year 2001 and has been turned into a museum after that. It is a great tourist attraction as it is one of its kinds and the history makes it intriguing. It has been termed as a must-visit by many leading newspapers and advice committees related to tourism. The ship still receives the Dressing ship honor, which is usually, awarded to the ships which are currently active.
The idea of converting the Sub Marine into a museum is all credit to Admiral V Parisha. Towing of such a huge ship to the beach side took around 18 months and millions of Dollar investment. But it is a unique idea in itself and is appreciated worldwide. The then chief minister of Andhra Pradesh Chandra Babu Naidu, inaugurated the place on 9th August 2002 and it was made open for public visit a few days after on the 24th of August. Many organizations such as the Indian Premier Defense Lab- National Ship Design and Research Center, the ONGC, Visakhapatnam Port Trust and others have joined hands and have provided full co-operation in the maintenance of the ship.
The place is flooded with tourist in the season even without the holiday season there are around 500-600 people daily that visit the place. Most of the generated revenue here is re-invested in the maintenance of the ship.Customer Service
